Just last month, the U.S. government's "terrorist watch list" surpassed one million names and is growing by over twenty-thousand names per month. The watch list includes the names of prominent people, like Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA), plus hundreds of thousands of ordinary Americans -- many of them with common names like Robert Johnson and James Robinson. Your name might be on the list, but there's no way to know for sure until you are delayed -- or even detained for hours in a back room. If you discover your name is on the list, it's nearly impossible to get off. It actually took an Act of Congress to get Nelson Mandela off the list. No joke. An Act of Congress.

Last figure I heard was 930,000. The list is said to be growing at 20,000 per month.

They are trying to fight the movement of all sorts of things. Not just terrorists. Why is Ted Kennedy on this list?

The time of watching everyone, taking away all privacy, has come. It is like this time of judgement, where either you conform to society, or you are going to be taken away....

locked up, drugged away, whatever.

I am not a conspiracy theorists, though I will never ignore the facts.

State Data Show Illinois State Police "Consent" Search Minority Drivers More Often, Find Contraband Less Frequently Compared to White Drivers


Civil Rights Groups Ask Governor Blagojevich to End Consent Searches by Illinois State Police

CHICAGO - A diverse group of Illinois civil rights organizations today called on Governor Rod Blagojevich to bar the practices of "consent searches" during routine traffic stops by the Illinois State Police. The request emerges from a report analyzing data collected by the Illinois Department of Transportation from law enforcement agencies across the State of Illinois pursuant to a state law aimed at combating racial profiling. The data collected for calendar year 2007 demonstrates that police officers continue to request permission to search the automobiles of drivers of color far more often than white drivers, and that these searches of minorities are far less productive than consent searches of whites. The report, prepared by the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety under the Illinois Traffic Stop Study Statistics Act, makes clear that consent searches remain problematic four years after the General Assembly first mandated that law enforcement agencies collect and report data on the race of drivers stopped and searched by police.





Joining the ACLU of Illinois in calling for an end to the practice of consent searches by the ISP were the following groups: the Rainbow Push Coalition, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the NAACP Illinois Conference, the Council on American-Islamic Relations Chicago, the Illinois Coalition on Immigrant and Refugee Rights, the Chicago Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and, Amnesty International - USA . The groups' letter to the Governor notes that "after four years of study, the conclusion is obvious - consent searches are an invidious device that is a condition of inequality imposed on minority citizens on our roadways."

A consent search occurs when law enforcement officials lack probable cause or even reasonable suspicion that criminal activity is occurring, yet nonetheless asks a civilian for permission to search their vehicle or person. Statewide data shows that during 2007 Hispanic drivers were more than twice as likely to be asked for permission to search their car after a routine traffic stop - and African American drivers were asked for permission three times more often. The State Police data was equally startling - with African American and Hispanic drivers being "consent searched" more than three times more often than whites. Data shows that drivers refuse permission for a consent search at about the same rate across racial lines - making clear that Black and Hispanic drivers are singled out for consent searches at a significantly higher rate than their white counterparts.

Most significant is the analysis of "hit rate" data collected for the first time in 2007. This new data shows that the consent searches targeting drivers of color yield markedly less contraband than searches of white drivers - making clear that there is an unjustified disparate impact on Blacks and Hispanics. Data shows that statewide police officers conduct consent searches of minorities 2.5 times more often than white drivers, but discover contraband at a rate one-half that of white drivers. The numbers are more dramatic for the ISP. ISP troopers ask for permission to search minority drivers more than three times as often as white drivers, but are nearly twice as likely to find contraband in a white motorist's vehicle compared to a Black motorist's vehicle, and eight times more likely to find contraband when searching a white driver compared to a Hispanic driver.

The civil rights groups said that the data makes clear that Governor Rod Blagojevich should bar the ISP from conducting consent searches.

"With a single executive order, Governor Blagojevich can end this practice that is proven to be discriminatory," said Harvey M. Grossman, Legal Director of the ACLU of Illinois. "The Governor not only can fix the policy. He can assure that minority drivers in Illinois no longer are targeted for humiliating, degrading roadside searches even though there is no evidence that they have broken any laws."

The 2006 Annual Report of the Illinois Traffic Stops Statistics Study was issued by the Illinois Department of Transportation. Adopted by the General Assembly in 2003, the legislation requires all law enforcement agencies in Illinois to collect data on all traffic stops during the calendar year. My phone is tapped, and has been for over a year. They put bugs in my house, follow me through the streets... and now, they stop another avenue of my suing their asses.

They told me they would kill me if I tried to sue. Put me in prison if I went after the Hell's Angels (I have no business doing such a thing; they treated me great the one time I was around a bunch of them... and while that hardly makes their sins go away, it shows me that they have a lot of sides, like anyone. I think I have much more important things to do, personally. I apreciate their need for Freedom, the impulse to be an allow, a dealer... I know all of those temptations. I have fallen for some of them. They also told me about the bugs in a million ways. As did the people who were trying to help me in my TOTAL WAR FOR TOTAL PEACE.

The government has been watching me a long time, since my radical education and writing became known to them. I am radical, though as I have stated a million times, and the intelligence agencies know, I am about peace and love as long as I am not threatened, and they are acting in ways leaders should.

Saying it is okay to bug the population of the united states is a horrifyling precept. Only Traitors to Liberty and Freedom would vote for such legislation. I hereby withdraw all support from anyone who voted for this legislation,

The Senate easily approved legislation Wednesday to overhaul government eavesdropping rules in terrorism and espionage cases and effectively granted immunity to telecommunications companies that participated in a secret domestic spying program, ending a contentious debate that has raged for more than two years.

Among the 69 senators who voted "yes" on final passage was Barack Obama of Illinois, who had opposed the immunity provision in earlier versions of the wiretapping bill, a rewrite of the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee said revisions to the legislation had alleviated his concerns, but Sen. John McCain's campaign seized on the reversal as a flip-flop of the first order.

"He's willing to change positions, break campaign commitments and undermine his own words in his quest for higher office," said Tucker Bounds, a spokesman for the Arizona Republican. McCain, campaigning in Pittsburgh, was absent for the vote.

The bill's 28 opponents included numerous prominent Democrats, including Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada. Lining up with Obama were 47 Republicans and 21 mostly moderate Democrats.

California's Democratic senators split on the vote - Barbara Boxer voted no; Dianne Feinstein voted yes.

"Sen. Obama has said before that the compromise bill is not perfect," his campaign said in a statement. "Given the choice between voting for an improved yet imperfect bill, and losing important surveillance tools, Sen. Obama chose to support the FISA compromise."

The bill addresses a broad scope of surveillance activities in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks. In certain cases, it limits the government's ability to collect information, but it also provides greater flexibility, an attempt to reflect the changing nature of national security threats in the post-Cold War era.

The revolt

This country... last night I was thinking, we really have to be ready for the Neo Cons to try and steal another election. If this happens, the us should pick up their guns and head for washington.

This time we must defend Liberty, and Democracy, by any means necessary. I will never forgive this country for leaving Gore out to dry. We should have swarmed the streets, shook the skyscarapers, and made sure thate every mother fucker in government knew we, the american people, are through taking their shit.

I am sick of being from a country that has a government which makes the good folk living here seem evil to half the world. You hear a lot of people say, Oh, we love the american people, but hate the country. This does not stop them from killing american citizens, mind you.

I am also sick of people thinking Iran should be a nuclear power, and sick of them being threatened. I have a great love for the Iranian people, though we of course have great differences in how to govern. I want to believe in the democratic process again, and Obama makes this easier, yet ... since Roosevelt, the presidents haven't done much more than fillthe pockets of the robber barons in every industry, especially the oil companies, which kept the Bush from even saying there is a greenhouse effect until the last year.
